Private Teaching
'Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.' Plato
John is available for private and group teaching both classical and jazz on the saxophone and clarinet starting from beginners to grade eight. For all his practical teaching he follows the Paul Harris's method of exploring and focusing on posture, pulse, phonology, and personality within the music. This approach gives all students a core foundation if they are playing for fun or wish to follow a graded system.
He also teaches classical and jazz theory and can assist with GCSE and A level music. He explores the understanding of musical concepts such as figured bass to secondary dominant chords in an easy and enjoyable manner.
John uses a method of teaching called simultaneous learning. Instead of the traditional method of teaching by learning scales and playing through classical pieces, this approach extracts the ingredients of a piece. This is then worked through by using musical connections in rhythm, sound, writing, and then placed back into context. This allows the student a full understanding of a piece using a creative right-brain process.
If you are a beginner player or do not have access to a saxophone, John can provide an alto saxophone for the duration of your lesson.
